Irving Burgie, a recent inductee into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, and the composer of such hit songs as “Day-O,” “Jamaica Farewell,” “Island In The Sun,” and "Mary’s Boy Child” for Harry Belafonte in the 1950’s, received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from St. John’s University at their graduation exercises at the Queens, New York campus on Sunday, May 18, 2008.
